I have a small pond in my backyard. ive noticed that there are leaches in my pond. where did they come from ?

last year i had koi fish and frogs in the pond. it was hand made. it was closed off for the winter, and today when i opened it up, there were leaches. i am very curious how they appeared in my pond.
