Can I use shade cloth as garden edging?

I am building some raised garden beds, not too high (About a small foot). And I am using some old sturdy fencing wire and have sewn shade cloth over this. What I want to know is whether the shade cloth will let too much air in and dry out the soil? And also if there are any dangers of any chemicals from the cloth leaching into the soil?
